| Supply of
Iodised Salt Under Public Distribution System (PDS) |

In order to provide access of iodised
salt to BPL Population, efforts have been taken by Salt Commissionerate
in coordination with State Food & Civil Supplies Commissionerates in
various states to distribute iodised salt under Public Distribution
System (PDS) at reasonable rates. Because of the initiatives taken by
the Salt Commissionerate, now iodised salt finds place in the PDS
outlets in the following states: |

Chhatisgarh Government is supplying iodised salt under Public Distribution System.

Gujarat Government is supplying Refined iodised salt at 1.00 Rs. per kg to
population.

Rajasthan Government has taken up the scheme of distribution of
Refined iodised salt through Fair Price Shop..

Andhra Pradesh Government has taken all out efforts for distribution
of iodised salt under PDS throughout the state. Refined Iodised Salt
is sold at Rs.5.00 per kg.

Karnataka Government is distributing Refined iodised salt at Rs.6.00 per kg and Non-refined at Rs. 8.00 per kg.

Refined Iodised salt is sold at Rs. 6.50 per kg and Non-Refined at Rs. 3.50 per kg to BPL population under PDS
in Tamilnadu
Himachal Pradesh Government is distributing Refined Iodised Salt at Rs. 4.00 per kg.

Besides the above States, iodised
salt is sold under PDS in Sikkim, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh (where 100 percent
Transport Subsidy is provided) Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and
Assam.

Our objective is to
provide access of iodised salt to the entire BPL population in the
Country
and therefore it is requested necessary steps may be taken for
distribution of iodised salt under PDS at subsidized rate/affordable
rates in all the States/UTs in the country. The requirement of iodised
salt at the rate of 5 kg per person per annum for BPL population at the
first instance may be worked out and provision of subsidy may also be
considered. Iodised salt can be procured from all salt manufacturing
states like Gujarat, Tamil nadu, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. For any
assistance in this regard for identifying iodised salt suppliers, this
office may be contacted. This office will also explore feasibility of
providing subsidy in the form of potassium iodate for PDS supply through
international agencies, once a decision is taken by your State
Government. This would facilitate supply of iodised salt under PDS at
an affordable rate to BPL population.
